Project Europa • Zigbee + Thread/Matter Smart Dimmer • Blue & White Series

Hey, welcome!

Yes, this switch will be both Zigbee and Matter, so this project includes updates on Zigbee as well.

To clarify, when you initially set up your switch, you’ll be able to choose whether you want it to be Zigbee or Matter. Once it’s paired, you will have to factory reset it to change between the two

Is there a timeline for other devices, such as your Smart Fan & Light Canopy Module for the EU power system? I was in the market for one and noticed yours was 120v only…

I signed up here to subscribe to updates on this project.

I just wanted to chime in and say please please please please make Z-Wave versions of your EU modules. Please. I’m looking at a move to Europe, I’m bringing my home automation system with me, and I desperately want to use Inovelli switches for the new home implementation.

No specific timelines for other products yet – we want to see how this one does before committing to anything else. But, good to know there’s a need for a Fan/Light Canopy Module!

This is hard to commit to and I’d have to do some more research on how Z-Wave compares to Zigbee and Thread to see if we would be able to implement it. The only data I have to go off of is US/CA sales which is about 10-1 Zigbee to Z-Wave sales (Thread/Matter is also 10-1).

I think, based on what I’ve read Z-Wave is a little more popular in Europe, but I’d have to do some additional research.

Quick video update – the manufacturer has 3D printed and done a quick test on dimming:

The paddle needs some additional structural enhancements, so that’s why it’s not shown. More to come, but it’s pretty cool seeing it come to life!

Can’t wait ! And to be honest I think Zigbee is more used than z-wave in Europe

You guys already make Z-Wave devices though? I must be missing something; I don’t understand how this isn’t information to which you already have access.

I mean at the end of the day if I have to write new code to migrate my system to ZigBee I’ll do it, but I have soooooo much effort invested in Z-Wave and I currently have like 30 Inovelli Z-Wave switches all around my house here in the US. It’s a superior technology and I’d reeeeaaally love to stick with what I’ve got. I’ve also written tons of Inovelli-specific code to do really cool stuff and I seriously would hate to abandon it.

Didn’t want to implicate anything btw. Z-wave is a great solution as well.

Cost and Ecosystem

  • Z-Wave

    • Higher device cost

    • Smaller but more consistent ecosystem

    • Often chosen for “serious” automation or security

  • Zigbee

    • Lower device cost

    • Massive ecosystem

    • Ideal for large sensor or lighting deployments

Strategic Trends in Europe

  • Zigbee remains dominant in consumer retail

  • Z-Wave remains strong in installer-driven and security-focused setups

  • Multi-protocol hubs (Z-Wave + Zigbee + Thread) are increasingly common

  • Matter does not replace Z-Wave; it competes more directly with Zigbee/Thread

This is the Europe switch thread. The information @Eric_Inovelli is referring to is the potential sales potential of Zigbee vs Zwave in Europe. Since they have never sold any switches in Europe, they don’t have a track record IN EUROPE to evaluate.

Hi guys, new here, just stumbled upon this brand and product on Reddit. Firstly I love what you’re doing, great job.

I’m UK based and just had some feedback to give.

The blue LED bar - this would fail my ‘wife approval test’ - and wouldn’t fit with the style of older housing stock of which there is a lot in UK/EU.

Have you considered more a ‘hidden’ LED embedded ‘behind’ the fascia plastic? I’m thinking like a Tado thermostat. Appreciate it might have slightly higher cost but personally, I’d pay it.

Secondly, from the Reddit post when you were looking at designs of UK/EURO switches you had some simple designs of large buttons, rounded edges - kinda like these Google Image Result

These would have mass appeal across Europe.

I personally like the clear ledbar for with clear visibility and I think I’d prefer the more modern and square design over the more rounded types of buttons. I think the square-ish design would actually fit better with the standard frames I got in my new house compared to the more traditional rounded ones.

But ask a 1000 people and you’d get a 1000 opinions haha, there’s no right or wrong.

I don’t disagree! I’m a product manager and designing by committee is almost never successful.

I guess my view though is us geeky ones are happy with an LED bar generally, but for most of us our wives are the rare determining factor in smart installs and this would fail the wife approval test for me.

Also feel like curves are ‘back in’! But for me personally in an 1880s house a hard edged switch with an LED bar isn’t cohesive, even if it passed the wife test!

The LED bar is very customisable. It can be turned off at all times (except when displaying light level changes), at which point it will just be a slim grey bar, and the actual colour can be configured. Set it to white, and it’s more purely functional and hopefully easier to fit more traditional decor.

Regarding the squared/rounded design of the frames, that’s why Inovelli has gone with System55, so you should be able to find a matching set of frames… in Europe at least. UK, we’ll have to import or 3D print anything non-standard. The actual switch plates and frame are detachable because of being System55.

I personally like the design, and it was settled on a long time ago now, but I feel this is about as flexible as Innovelli could be, while keeping their visual identity with the LED bar common to the US switches.

Forgive me if this question was already asked, but what is the IP rating for these switches going to be?

I’m thinking of getting a few of these, including one for the bathroom (light switch near the sink and mirror), but if it’s not IP44 or better, then I’ll need to stay with my current eyesore jerry-rigged solution with a SwitchBot Bot toggling a dumb IP44 lightswitch.

I love the LED bar, is it fix blue coloured or maybe RGB to show different status from HomeAssistant? (maybe an idea for your future products if this feature is not available yet:wink:) I could imagine a customisable LED bar to use it to show notifications through pulsating or flashing or just turning a different colour on in case of dryer has finished. Is it an option for LED’s to permanently turn them on? Or turning them on from evening until morning? I like when the switch with is easy to find in the dark.

Can I pair multiple switches for the same lighting circuit to control non-smart lightbulbs?

I would join to the previous question: would it be IP44 or higher rating certified switch?

What is the added value of mm-Wave sensor in the switch? Which angle it will detect and which distance?

And last but not least what is the estimated launch time and expected MSRP in EUR? I really hope we need to wait further few months only.

And big thanks for the development for EU customers.:innocent:

This looks great. How can I be informed as soon as the mmwave version is out? The newsletter or can I register interest somewhere?

A lot of this is covered in the opening post and will be common to the US switches, so you can check out their support documents. LED bar is RGB and programmable, virtual switch pairing will be possible but not wired, etc. etc. I don’t think IP rating has been discussed, though.

mmWave is not happening until the regular switch proves viable, but they’ve designed with the possibility for the future. The value is that it will be able to detect presence and not just motion, so lights can come on and stay on while you’re sat still in a room, and then turn off when you leave. See here for the US switch set up guide, which gives an indication of what the capabilities could be for sensing angles and distance.

EU mmWave is still just a possibility. This current switch is aiming for June, after which they will assess how the European market performs for them, and then they’ll announce a new project, design cycle etc. etc.
