Hi, everyone, I have a dumb dimmer switch that I need (want ) to replace in my house. Regarding my smart home setup, I have a Apple Home with many matter hubs and thread border routers and a HA green setup with a Z2M coordinator (the Z2M network is pretty strong with a SMLight SLZB-06P7 POE ethernet located centrally located in my house with a good handful of routers (so from a network perspective both (Matter over Thread & Z2M) have strong networks without dropouts occurring).
Two important notes, this is currently a dumb dimmer switch I need to replace which #1- controls a hallway ceiling single light fixture with a dumb light bulb (no smart bulbs).
#2- Also, there is no neutral wire in the switch box (but I 95% believe for both the white and blue series switches, the neutral wire is optional but wanted to put that fact out there).
Just an fyi, regarding my current Inovelli devices, I have 3 Inovelli white series matter over thread 2in1 dimmer switches and 1 Inovelli Zigbee blue series dimmer in my smart home so far.
What I am asking is for the communityās opinion, do I go with the white series or the blue series? I do REALLY LOVE HA especially with Z2M (I am new to HA (2 months only) and been an Apple Home person for 8+ years.
You should describe the load(s) the switch(es) will have. That will make a big difference, because if they are smart bulbs and you want to control them by binding, you really only have one option at present. If they are dumb bulbs, then thatās a different story.
Thanks Bry, I just edited my post, great point! I put it in my main post, but itās a hallway single ceiling light fixture with a dumb light bulb (not smart light bulbs).
OK, I voted, but honestly if you already have both, it might not matter (no pun intended). Iām going with Zigbee because I already have a fair amount of Zigbee in my setup and the HA Yellow wonāt do both Thread and Zigbee on the same radio without an experimental driver.
When I first looked into the Home Assistant Yellow and SkyConnect (renamed to āZBT-1ā), they were advertising a multiprotocol firmware which allowed the deviceās Silicon Labs chip to use both Zigbee and Thread networks with one radio. Now, they seem to be saying that it wonāt work well due to some technical issues. There are two separate firmwares, one each for Zigbee and Thread. They also mention that a USB extension cable is needed to physically move the ZBT-1 radio away from any USB 3.0 ports because USB 3.0 has been known to cause noise and RF interference for 2.4 GHz wireless devices.
Iām wondering if anyoneās tried using 2x āZBT-1ā devices, one each for Zigbee and Thread? In theory, that seems to be a possible design for a Home Assistant hub device to avoid any issues with running multiprotocol on the same radio. Would there still be RF interference between Zigbee and Thread radio frequencies?
Smart Bulb + Switch binding is a game changer. There is no other way for me because my lights will always work (and near instantaneously) regardless of the status of the Apple Home Hub or HA.
Even if you have a dumb bulb now, if there is a chance you want to put a smart bulb in it, I say go with Blue.
Thread / Matter supports it. The switch supports it. Currently no hubs support configuring it. Iāve seen some posts in the forum where people have made it work by writing custom code to interface with the matter server to configure it.
okā¦looks like Matter is not ready for prime time yet
I have several devices and has major headache to add/deal with them (in HA with Apple TV as a boarder router, Skyconnect and now with Aqara M3 Hub)
thanks, everyone! I am going with a blue series zigbee switch! Like everyone said for the most part, and I agree, the Zigbee protocol is just way more mature and stable then Matter over Thread is currently! thanks again!
Iām having trouble finding the posts that you mention. Any chance you could point me to them? I donāt like the popcorn effect and the time it takes to turn on my status bar LEDs.
Thanks!
