Suggestions for investigating button press issues (VZM31-SN, but likely other models too)

I have a VZM32-SN directly bound to a VZM36 fan canopy switch. My wife mentioned to me that she was finding the switch to not be very reliable and requiring multiple presses to work. I hadn’t noticed any issues myself. After watching her press the button, I realized she was holding it down long enough to trigger brightness changes instead of turning the light on and off. I disabled that setting, and it’s been better but I still get complaints.

When she’s told me in time, I’ve looked at the zigbee2mqtt logs and didn’t see any update from the switch. But most of the time she just hits the switch until it works and is mildly annoyed at my technology choices .

I figure there are a few possibilities:

  1. The button on the switch is buggy, and nothing short of replacing it will work. I’m just lucky it’s working fine for me.
  2. The button is working fine, but the switch isn’t sending the toggle command.
  3. The switch is working fine, but the fan canopy isn’t picking up the command to respond to.

I’m thinking what I can do is set LedColorWhenOn (and Off) on the switch to different colours. But, I’m not clear if the colour will only change when there’s a successful report from the fan controller, or if it will optimistically change the colour?

With that in mind, does anyone else have suggestions for tracking down this sort of issue? It’s intermittent (even for my wife) so I’m thinking any way to use the LED strip to identify working (or not) would be good.
