VZM35-SN Fan Switch became vocal after FW update

I recently have moved from Hubitat to Home Assistant, and after getting all the switches moved over, a number of them advised of firmware updates available.

I have 5 VZM35-SN Fan switches, 1 of them was kept as a spare (never installed) and 4 of them were working fine on Hubitat for the last few months, however after the move to Home Assistant and the firmware update on of the fan switches makes a high pitched buzz that increases with intensity in direct correlation the brightness of the LED bar.

I have a video of the behavior, but I am not able to upload it as a “new user”.

I swapped in my spare and updated it’s firmware, and it and the other existing switch don’t exhibit the same behavior.

Just checking if this has been seen before and if there is a fix, or if it is a hardware failure.

Unfortunately even though I have only been using the switches for a little less then a year, they sat in the box for almost a year while the house was being built, so have passed their warranty coverage, so hoping there is some advice available.

Thanks

I had this happen, too. I didn’t make the correlation between the LED bar and the noise and just assumed it was the level the fan was set to… but obviously the LED’s are (by default) mapped to mirror the level, so that makes sense.

I figured I just had a defective switch and swapped it out.

I started having this same issue a few days ago. Do I need to replace the switch or is it definitely a firmware issue? I’m running a Samsung SmartThings V3 Hub.

Oh, this thread is interesting to discover. I have a VZM35 that just started buzzing like crazy too, but nothing has changed. Firmware hasn’t updated, I’ve been on the same Hubitat hub for over a year, etc. It’s just buzzing so loud (the switch, not the fan itself) that I thought my fridge was leaking refrigerant.

In my case the LED bar isn’t the cause. I have tried setting the bar to on, off, full brightness, various colors and animated effects - nothing changes the buzz. But if I turn the fan off, the noise stops. And, of course, the bar reflects the off state. I wonder if y’all have tried the same - confirming that the light bar is the cause, not just a linked symptom?

I’ve been here a long time so maybe I can upload a video of the issue. I clearly captured it buzzing/hissing with the fan on and off (I realized it doesn’t matter, the load doesn’t cause the noise) - but if I pop the air gap switch, it goes away. Then comes right back when I reconnect power.

@spectreotvt, @justinlindh, @bhasden, @jon I’ll PM you with some questions in just a bit. Hopefully the questions will help us get to the bottom of what is going on.

You guys are the best! I was happy to fill out the form you sent over. I also hope it helps you figure this out. Weird because every switch in my home is an Inovelli and I rarely have issues. Between them all there are tens of thousands of hours of reliable service. So I’m thrilled to see you stand behind figuring out those rare situations that isn’t true.

I’d missed this video reply, but yes… this is exactly the same thing mine was doing!

I actually just came to the forum to see if this was a common problem. Put me down as another.
