VZM35-SN Blue Fan Switch - The buzz strikes back

I’ve had another one of my blue fan switches start singing to me.

This happened before in the thread linked below, and there were a number of people that mentioned having it happen as well.

That thread closed after it went a while without any updates and it didn’t seem like there was any findings on what was causing the noise or would a fix might be.

Since I’ve now had another one start doing the same thing I got to play around with it a little bit more.

The buzzing seems solely dependent on the LED. It increases and decreases when I change the intensity of the LED regardless of the load on the fan.

It starts and stops when I change the color of the LED. When I said it to RED the noise will go away for a couple minutes and then start at a very low volume. Setting it to green makes it really loud.

I got a little distracted, seeing if I could figure out how to make it play a song by setting up LED changes in automations… But I realized that was probably not productive use of time.

Anyway, I’m just really curious to see if there was any findings on what actually causes this buzzing and if there is a way that I can resolve it on my own?

I am worried it could be an indication of hardware failure so I have gone ahead and ordered some replacements, so any additional information would be nice.

Thanks!

I’m having the same issue, the VZM35-SN Fan Switch makes noises but it still works. This switch has been installed for about two years without issues and just started making the noise. However, I will have to replace this switch since the noise is problematic since the switch is installed in a bedroom and it is audible throughout the room.

I have the same setup in another room with the same ceiling fan and it doesn’t make noise. Not sure what is causing this.

I saw that this issue was posted here before but didn’t see any solutions.

@EricM_Inovelli I have swapped the switch out for the “White” version, but it seems a shame to just discard the noisy one. Previously you guys had asked for these back to look into the issue, I figured I would at least check to see if sending this one back might be helpful?

I’m not asking for a replacement, I just have 4 more of these switches throughout the house, so if anything can be found about how this happens, it would be a relief.

I have started turning the LEDs off. This works until a power outage.

Is it possible to get a update to the driver or firmware that will allow a toggle to permanently turn the LEDs off?

I was considering buying another blue fan switch to replace the noisy one, but its concerning to see that this issue has happened to quiet a few people and there was no follow up with a resolution. Is this a known issue that can develop in these switches? I hate to replace it and have the same thing happen again.

It seems there is a small number of switches that a capacitor in the AC-DC circuit fails and begins to vibrate (which causes the noise). The only solution is to swap it out with a new one, but we have not identified anything in common with the switches that are affected by this.

@Mop_Zero setting the LED intensity to 0% for on and off would disable the LED I believe.

Thanks Eric. That’s what I’m doing. The problem is that if there is ever a power outage then the switch turns back on with the LEDs on and I have to manually turn them off again.

If its possible to incorporate that into the switch so they can’t turn on again, that’d be awesome.

Hmm, that sounds like there might be a bug if that is happening. @Lance_Inovelli can you do some testing on it?

Yup, I’ll get on it later tonight. @spectreotvt is there anything more you can provide on how the switch is installed and configured? Is the switch powering just the fan or is it a fan and a light? Does this noise happen with both intensity and color changes, just want to be sure I am following when it is happening.

@spectreotvt @EricM_Inovelli In my testing I was not able to produce any kind of hum/buzz from the fan switch. I used a fan switch (VZM35-SN) with a ceiling fan, dimming of LED bar with settings from 10% though 99% on all fan speeds. LED bar set to zero, 10, 20, 30, 40, 50, 60, 70, 80, 90, 99%. Ran an automation to turn the LED bar from zero to 90% for 6 hours and no hum/buzz. Is there anything that I missed? Tested in both Hubitat and Homeassistant. What brand of fan is it, is there a light and is it also being powered from the fan switch?

@spectreotvt , can you post some video and screen shots of your configuration and how you are activating the LED intensity level?

I will need to hook it back up somewhere to do that, but I will work on that tonight.

hopefully that works…

Those are the time and changes in general for the intensity and color. The intensity made the most difference, but the color did seem to make a little bit of change. Green seems to produce the least noise this time, which is different then what was happening when it was still mounted in the wall.

So it would seem that the load on the switch might make a difference, but I did not have anything I could rig for a load on it this time.

The buzz/hum is always present as long as the switch is powered. There is no load on the switch in this test, and it is wired in with neutral and ground.

It was powering this fan : Amazon.com: Hunter Fan 64 inch Noble Bronze Indoor Ceiling Fan with Light Kit and Remote Control for Living Room, Bedroom, Office, Laundry Room (Renewed) : Tools & Home Improvement

The previous switch that did this same thing was on this fan : Amazon.com: TroposAir 72" Tornado Oil Rubbed Bronze Industrial Ceiling Fan… : Tools & Home Improvement

The light for the fans was on a separate switch.

Noise is affected most by intensity, a little by color as shown in the video.

@Mop_Zero can you add some info on how you are setting the LED bar intensity and any additional switch configurations. Do you have any LED bar notifications created or setup on this device (though automations or parameters)?

I’m happy to send this one back to you guys, just let me know where to send it.

That won’t be necessary, Eric said that the capacitor may be failing and that is being looked into by engineers, but thank you for that. VZM35-SN Blue Fan Switch - The buzz strikes back - #6 by EricM_Inovelli

Hi Lance, I’m making the adjustments to the led effect via hubitat. I’ve removed any automations associated with the LEDs on this switch.

Thanks, looking into this

I also have this problem and now most of the LED bar is not functioning. I have an extra for another room that I need to remodel but I’ll swap it out. Do we know if there is any specific things we can do to prevent this failure?
