VZM36 - Blue Canopy whines when Fan is off

I recently installed my VZM36 and VZM-31SN. It seems to be working great, and I’m still tweaking some parameters. It’s wired to the Line side of the switch (not load which is known to cause buzzing/hum) with neutral in place.

I’ve noticed that when the fan is Off, I hear a coil whine emitting from the controller. It is very noticable when entering the room. As soon as I turn the fan motor on, the whine goes away. It immediately returns when turning off the fan. The lights being on/off do not impact the noise.

Is this normal, or am I looking at a possibly defective unit? Any ideas on what I should try first/tweak are greatly appreciated!

Edited to correct typo

The canopy module should be wired to the LINE side of the switch, not the load.

:person_facepalming:t3: Complete typo. Thought too hard about it when typing the original post. The wiring is correct per the diagram, on the LINE side.

By “controller” , do you mean the canopy module? If that’s what is whining, I would double check all of the connections there.

That’s correct, the canopy module itself is emitting the noise when the fan is off. Once it has a load on it, the noise stops. I’ll see if my phone can pick it up when I get home today. Maybe my ears are just too sensitive.

What is the make and model of the fan?

Harbor Breeze 52" Centreville - AC motor, 3 speed pull chain with reversing switch, 52w on high

Just checking.
