I installed the Inovelli white into my bathroom gang box which has two switches, one for an array of three lights the other an exhaust fan. With a multimeter I confirmed the load and line wires on the light switch before installation.
Changes I have made to the gang box
Replace twist nut 4 wire neutral bundle with a 5-connector terminal connect
Add the included neutral extension cable to the terminal connect as the 5th connector.
Installed the Inovelli switch with the neutral, ground, line and load wires in the correct location.
Switched the Inovelli to Smart Bulb Mode
Results:
Inovelli switch seems to be working fine but the switch for the exhaust fan is not working.
What’s odd is if I leave both switches loose and jiggle around the switches sometimes the exhaust fan comes on. That suggests a grounding issue to me, but I cannot understand how.
With the Inovelli switch in place the multimeter shows no voltage when testing the exhaust line wire and a neutral from the connector box. I tested replacing the Inovelli with the dumb switch I removed, and the exhaust fan switch works correctly and has voltage on the line wire.
Does anyone have any ideas? I can provide pictures if needed.
The White series Smart Dimmer is not rated nor suitable for a fan load. The proper White series for a fan would be the White Smart Fan Switch (currently on pre-order status but not yet available) or the White Smart On/Off which has not yet been produced.
Sorry if my previous post was unclear: only the switch that controls the lights was replaced with the Inovelli white. The fan switch remains a dumb switch. Does this setup still require a fan switch?
ETA: The White’s light array is also working fine.
Just so I understand, you have a 2-gang box in the bathroom that had two dumb switches, one for the light and one for the exhaust fan. You are replacing the dumb switch for the light with the Inovelli.
Your problem is that that fan with the dumb mostly isn’t working. When you test between the fan switch’s line conductor (which is the unswitched constant hot) and the neutral, you’re not seeing any voltage.
The Inovelli is working properly, controlling the lights?
I’d suggest that you pull both switches out and take a look at the black (hot) bundle. I see some bare copper, which makes me wonder if that conductor is making a good contact with the others. That copper shouldn’t be exposed anyway, so pull the nut, get the conductors all wrapped around each other well, and then re-cap.
If you need to provide pictures if that doesn’t get it, you need to have both switches pulled out fully. Pull the other conductors out as well so that conductors aren’t hiding others. Take the picture(s) so we can see all the connections on the switches and clearly inside of the box.
