Hello, I’m wondering if anybody else has installed this switch and is getting extremely inconsistent readings from the humidity sensor (and temp for that matter) making it very difficult for an Apple home user to automate a bathroom fan.
I’ve attached the trend over a 3 hour period for this sensor vs the arre temp sensor in an adjacent bathroom.
This is discussed in one of the threads about about this feature (I think the zigbee thread). The sensors are heat sensitive, and the components in the switch generate heat, making the readings unreliable for anything other than directional change.
eric_inovelli:
Some disappointing news, we will have to scrap the temperature portion for now as they just couldn’t get a reliable way for the algorithm to work properly. We’re keeping the sensor in there in hopes we can create some sort of, “build your own algorithm” type parameter, but for now to keep the project moving, we’ll just move forward with the humidity portion. However, I want to temper expectations here in that the humidity sensor relies on relative heat as well, so we’re not going to be getting exact RH% values. We’re thinking something like low, medium, high detection for now.
Expanding more on the reason why the temperature feature is not going to be promised. They did a ton of testing on various loads and found that the best they could do was to get within a 3-4 degree Celcius (up to 9 degree F) range and to me, that did not seem acceptable as most people (at least speaking from my own experience) monitor within 2-3 degrees Fahrenheit in their houses. If there was a possible 9 degree differential between floors, I would start to wonder what happened to the AC or heater!
I’ve installed multiple, and they all behave the same way. after air-gap reset, I can turn the switch on via paddle. The light strip turns on. I can turn off via paddle. The light strip stays on. Then the paddle no longer controls the switch. I can continue to use through hubs.
Same symptom of the paddle stopping working after one on off cycle (with the led bar on) on the one I installed tonight - disappointed that it’s this flakey; hopefully a new firmware will fix shortly.
I’m also having the problem with the paddles not responding. After resetting with the air gap, I can turn on the switch, then when I turn off, the led bar turns off completely, cycles through cyan (I think) then purple, then the switch turns the load back on. I’m connected to a single light fixture, no other switch. Oddly, it did work correctly when first installed and it consistently works when controlled from Apple Home or Home Assistant.
I did goof around with settings in Home Assistant, so I am worried I set something wrong as Home Assistant has weird labels for the config parameters (I’m assuming HA needs an update).
I want to try a factory reset, but with no config manual, I’m gonna guess and try the reset for the dimmer in the morning. I also have another switch to install, so I’ll be interested to see if it has the same problem.
The factory reset steps are described in the manual:
Factory reset did not solve
Thanks for testing this resolution. Since it’s so easy for us to reproduce, hopefully we get an answer from Inovelli soon with a line of sight to a firmware fix. I’m holding off on installing my next four until this one is working reliably. Even though the paddle goes to lunch, the humidity readings and home assistant controls keep working for me. Humidity readings seem to bounce +/- 2% but that’s good enough for my use-case of automating a bathroom exhaust fan. HA blueprint to help this automation: bathroom-humidity-exhaust-fan.yaml · GitHub
x-posting my +1 to the on/off physical controls not responding in case the wiring detail or video is helpful
Same here. The first one out of the box failed with a bath fan. Holding off on the other 14 until this is fixed.
Following up from my earlier post.
First switch: I removed the switch from Apple Home and Home Assistant, then factory reset. Airgapped for extra measure. Same result.
On this switch, using the top paddle to turn it on works normally. However, using the bottom paddle causes the switch to perform a full reset dance: the LED bar turns off, the load turns back on, and the LED bar goes cyan, then purple, and finally returns to normal (on) status. The next press of the paddle will work correctly and turn off the load and update the LED bar.
This is somewhat intermittent, and I can usually trigger it by turning on the switch and then immediately turning it off, but not always. It will also usually (but not always) work correctly if I wait a while between pressing any paddle.
I’ve double-checked the wiring, and it looks ok, but I will recheck to be extra sure.
I have a video of this behavior if it would be helpful.
Second switch: Today I installed my second switch in my bathroom, attached to a Broan-Nutone exhaust fan (with a Broan-Nutone OEM motor replacement kit BKR60 BKR60 Broan-NuTone® QuicKit™ Bath Fan Replacement Motor and Cover/Grille, 60 CFM ). This one is acting as others have described. The first on/off cycle of the paddles works, but then they stop entirely responding (no reset dance). The LED bar stops updating after turning the switch on.. Controlling the load from Apple Home or Home Assistant does work, but the LED bar does not update in this situation either. The LED bar cannot be individually controlled in Apple Home or Home Assistant.
I’ve also factory reset/airgapped this switch a couple of times with no change in behavior.
As a workaround, I have an Apple Home automation to turn on the fan switch when I turn on the bathroom light switch (Inovelli White Dimmer, working perfectly), and then automatically turn the fan switch off after an hour.
Hopefully this info will help lead to a resolution for those of us struggling with our new switches. I’m only a little disappointed at this point, and I feel like it probably only needs a firmware fix (at least for my second switch).
Hey Bry, thanks for the link the the instructions.
Could you please take a look at the “Quick Tap Sequences” section… It says “follow the link below to see all the Quick Tap Sequences”, but then the text below isn’t actually a link, it’s literally just plain text saying “White Series On/Off Switch Quick Tap Sequences“.
I think actually a number of things that should be links (another example “White Series On/Off Switch LED Bar Indicator Tables”) are just plain text, not links. If someone could go through and re-link in that doc, hopefully?
Thanks!
EDIT: The links are present now.
I have been testing a new switch yesterday and today. I was able to replicate the second switch issue once, but now I am trying to record it for the engineer and am struggling to get it to do it again.
Do you know if this behavior is the same before the switch is joined to the network?
For the first switch, that seems more like bad wiring, but once you confirm that let me know.
Hi there,
Apologies for this! The links have been fixed.
Please let me know if you notice any other issues in the documentation.
Thank you!
Continuing from the other thread now that it’s closed.
The only settings I changed were the LED default color from blue to white, and LED on intensity from 33 to 5 (HA shows the entity id as closet_light_load_control_6). I did this on both switches. Behavior was the same before and after I made those settings changes (I was also worried I’d goofed something up, especially the LED on intensity).
I’m also having the problem with the on/off switch stopping responding to paddle presses.
For me, if I turn on the fan, I can not turn it off. If I air gap it, it color cycles but turns itself back on. I can then turn it off. If I turn it on again, I can’t turn it off.
One thing that seems odd to me, is when I turn it on the LED intensity is not changing to the on intensity. then when I pull the air gap and it come back (but is on already) the LED intensity is correct and if I turn it off it lowers the led intensity as expected. wash and repeat.
During all this, you can still control it from (in my case) Home Assitant, but the paddle stops responding until an air gap.
Subscribing to this thread as I am getting the same issue with the paddle being unresponsive. Been real busy with works so I haven’t had a chance to mess around with it much but have noticed the issue. Luckily the only one that I use the most is triggered on/off when another light switch is turned on/off.
I’m really familiar with Z-Wave and custom parameters. This is my first Thread switch looking through the manual to find about configurations such as load control, RGB indication, and so on yielded no result or maybe I missed it. That information would be really useful.
Lastly not switch related bug. But the short link and QR for manual doesn’t work. http://inov.li/vtm30sn.
