Hey guys I haven’t ordered yet but I would like to get a blue dimmer and the aux switch I decided it would be a good idea to pop my switch off and take a look before it is a 3 way with 1 load.
After popping it off it has 3 wires to each switch and I’m unsure how I should wire this I assume this is non neutral and I should also order the bypass as well?
Can you tease the switches out a bit more and take a picture(s) of each box that shows a clearer view of the switch wiring (those unique wire “nuts” are chonky and block a lot of the view) and the inside of each box? Multiple pictures are more useful than trying to get 1 perfect picture.
I can confirm the 3wires as far as what else in the box I guess I’ll have to dig a bit deeper idk what’s up with those giant connectors but they really block up a lot of view
Ok down stairs switch is 4 wires only before the weird connectors they a black red white to the switch and a ground to the back of the box so I’m guessing power in and load are all upstairs I’ll post those pics in a minute
Ok upstairs we do indeed have more 2 Romex coming in the same reb black and white coming in looks like the red and white are going to the switch the black is tied to the second Romex white and the second Romex black going to switch this box is also grounded looking like from the second to Romex
I am feeling like that’s a non-neutral. In the box with the two Romex (upstairs), separate the black and white conductors bundled together. see if that white is hot without it being connected to anything. If you have a meter, test between it and the ground or the metal box. If you have a non-contact tester then just touch it to see if it’s hot.
Okay thanks. So what I’m thinking is power starts at the light. The hot comes in on the white of the 2-wire and the switched hot goes back to the switch on the black of the 2-wire.
What’s happening is the hot isgetting sent to the other switch and then returned back switched. I would normally confirm this by looking at the switch downstairs to see if that black from the 2-wire is connected to the black screw of the switch, but you’ve got leads coming off of it not screws. Take a look at the switch to see if whatever is connected to the black of the 2-wire is marked as load.
If that lines up, this wiring diagram should be correct. The Inovelli will go in the upstairs box.
If you want, do this in two stages. First wire the Inovelli as a 2-way without connecting any of the conductors from the 3-wire. You’ll know at that point whether or not you need a bypass.
Once that’s working, connect the two conductors of the 3-wire and then wire the Aux. You’ll need to reset the switch parameters to three-way momentary or however your hub displays it.
@Bry all the screws on the downstairs switch are all the same color:person_facepalming: the black is hot wether any switch configuration it is always hot red is hot when upstairs switch is down and downstairs is in either position white is hot when both are down upstairs switch up downstairs down black still hot red is dead white is hot both up everything is hot
I didn’t really get that last part. I suggest that you just wire the 2-way first using the two conductors from the two wire in the upstairs box. Don’t worry about the 3-wire or the other switch for now.
@Bry sorry one last question for the first step the 2 wire single pole setup I’m still a bit confused and just wanna clarify the white is my line and the black is my load correct
Yes that’s correct. I know that goes against the normal neutral convention for wire colors, but that is the normal convention for non-neutral wiring. Plus, you tested the white disconnected then it was hot.
Take a look at the wiring diagram I posted and you’ll see what I’m talking about.
@Bry gotcha thanks again for your help this is the only 3 way in the house the rest are single pole also non neutral so I figured tackle this one first and the rest will be a breeze lol thanks again for your help
