White Dimmer Flickers in the Dimmer Mode

Hello! First, apologies if this is the wrong thread to ask. I’ve just installed my first White (VTM31-SN), as a single-pole with neutral wiring. Everything works great as an on-off, however when I switch to the dimmer mode (replacing a dumb dimmer switch), the lights flicker (except at “full”). Do you have any tips on diagnosing the issue, or potential configuration settings I should try first?

Thanks in advance for your help!

You can try switching from leading to trailing edge dimming.

Are you using LED bulbs? They can be fussy so you should try “trailing edge” dimming option. For those wanting a technical explanation of this, it is explained here: Choosing the Right Dimmer: A Deep Dive into Trailing Edge Dimmer I believe the Inovelli ships in “leading edge” mode by default, so you need to change this yourself. Or you may have to try a different LED bulb. Or if you have multiple dimmers, try the bulb in different ones to see if the same problem exist on multiple dimmers (in which case, its the bulb), but if only on one dimmer, then the dimmer may be the issue.

Thank you (both)! Switching to trailing edge did fix the problem. My own curiosity dictates that I’m going to read the link you added too :joy:

I have an interesting follow-up to this thread. I’ve installed my second white, same room, same type of light bulbs, different circuit (of course), with the only difference being that this circuit is 3-way (this thread helped with getting it wired). For these lights however, I experience the flickering regardless of whether the switch is configured to leading or trailing edge (and the trailing edge switch did work for the others on the single pole circuit).

In case it’s relevant, the order of the steps I took in configuration were:

  1. set to multi-way + dumb mode
  2. set to dimmer
  3. set to trailing edge (also tried with leading edge)

I can try with a different switch, but is there anything else I should try first?

Trailing edge doesn’t work with Dumb 3-ways unfortunately. You’ll have to swap out the Dumb switch for an Aux if you want trailing edge to work.

Please note that Trailing Edge is only available on neutral single-pole and neutral multi-way with an aux/add-on switch (multi-way with a dumb/existing switch and non-neutral setups are not supported and will default back to Leading Edge).

The article is for the Blue Series, but the same limitation exists on Red and White as well.

thank you!

You can find the White parameters here if you want to confirm:

:joy: it was right there in the docs, and I completely missed it
