White Series - Factory Reset not working

When I do the factory reset on my White Series, after it rotates to the red color and I release, it’ll quickly display cyan then green before going back to the standard blue. I’m not able to get the three flashing red lights as shown in the video tutorial. I’ve pulled the stop gap a couple times, and reset at the breaker, and nothing appears to help.

Any ideas on how to get this to reset so I can continue trying to configure this? I ran into issues while trying to set up the Smart Bulb mode and decided to remove the switch from HomeKit thinking I could reset and start over.

I’ve also tried hitting the configuration button 3x to try that pairing mode, but it doesn’t seem to work.

I assume you followed White Series 2-1 Switch • Button Combinations, Quick Tap Sequences & Local Configuration Options | Inovelli Help Center

Upon seeing the red LED bar, release the top paddle then the config button. Don’t release both at once; more of a rolling action. Top paddle then config button. See if that works for you.

I followed the instructions & video shown on the Digital Manual for the White Series, found here.

I tried what you said and it didn’t work. Also, when I watch the video, it doesn’t look like the top paddle is being released before the config button. It appears, to me, that both are released simultaneously.

Well dang…That’s the only way I can get my Blue 2-1 to reset (with the roll release), but unfortunately I don’t have any white series to try. Maybe @Lance_Inovelli has some other suggestions.

I’m having the same issue with the reset and followed those same instructions.

The reset and pairing have worked on about 10 of my switches, but the past two switches I keep getting this error where I can’t pair the switches even though the light is flashing blue. When I tried the reset, I got the same color combination after I released, not the three red flashes.

I’m using Apple HomeKit.

I’m also hitting this issue.

I bought 20 switches and 3 of them seem to had dropped off randomly. Flipping the breaker didn’t help so I tried to factory reset the switches with the hope that I can re-pair. The factory reset seems to have had some effect since the switch reverted from a dimmer to an on/off.

However, I’m unable to connect the switches to HomeKit/Apple Home. The device fails at the first/connect/discovery step after I take a picture of the QR code that I used to previously (successfully) pair the switches.

The switches continue to work with button presses OK.

I too, am having the same issue as described here. I am unable to pair to my matter enabled home assistant. In addition to following the instructions and watching the manual’s video on how to reset, I’ve also tried the rolling release of the Up and Config buttons. I am getting the Cyan led followed by Green led, followed by the standard Blue. I only bought one of these white series matter enabled switches as a test to see how it went and so I have no other devices to try.

Help?

I did find this in the downloadable .pdf manual where they talk about holding the config button first and then pressing the up button to start the process. It did not help for me.

The reset is successful after it turns red followed by cyan then yellow or green and ending with blue. I have only had my White Dimmers for a day or so but have done many resets and pairing to Home-Kit testing and each time I would get an error (which was only twice) I needed to do a reset then manually enabled pairing followed by adding within Home-kit.

I also ran into this issue with 1 out of the 20 switch just dropped out of the thread network. I factory reset it, and it flashed red → cyan → yellow. it seemingly reset because it changed from dimmer back to on/off, but I can no longer pair to Homekit again, and tapping config button 3-time does not enable pairing mode.

Just chiming in to say I have the same exact issue. One of my 10 switches is in this state. No way to connect it back to HomeKit and can’t reset it. But it continues to work as a dumb switch. Anyone figure out a fix???

I’m still stuck, and now further confused after going back to the digital manual today & noticing that the text no longer matches the video demonstration. It reads this… “To reset your switch, hold down on the top of the paddle (on) and the config/favorites button simultaneously for 20 seconds until the LED Bar (D) turns green, yellow, then red. It will blink cyan, green(non-neutral) or yellow (neutral), and then blue confirms the switch has been reset as shown in the video below.” I’m almost certain that last sentence used to align with the video and say something about how it should blink red 3 times before turning blue, which is what we’re all seeing in the video. Which is it, Eric? Is it stoplight, release, 3x red > blue OR is it stoplight, release, cyan > green/yellow > blue? I’m getting the latter, I do not get the 3x flashing red sequence. Is that an older video that’s maybe specific to a different switch series that shouldn’t be on the White Series digital manual?

Also, FWIW, I’m also experiencing these two issues with the same switch:

  1. I can’t get the relay click to be audible on this device. I’ve successfully toggled it on/off on the load switch in a 3-way setup with 2x VTM31-SN (White Series), but I can’t get this single-pole to work for some reason.

  2. Because the pairing mode times out, I’ve tried tapping the config button 3x (i.e. the manual way to start the pairing method) and it doesn’t appear to place it in pairing mode. It doesn’t pulse blue, nor can I manually look it up and tap on it within the available accessory list screen. I have to factory reset the switch to have it appear again as an accessory under Add Accessories > More Options.

I’ve reset a couple of mine during some random testing and the procedure was always the same.

Hold up paddle and config button. (Push them at the same time)
The led bar will turn green (thread signal test) keep holding.
The led bar will turn yellow (settings) keep holding.
The led bar will turn red. (Reset) Let go of both buttons.

Bar cycles cyan, yellow, and dark blue. The dark blue is actually just the switch turning off into standby factory blue.

To verify it factory reset. Change your light bar thru the settings to a different color when off and on. I keep all of mine white. So when it factory resets it will turn back to blue, if it doesn’t turn back to blue it did not reset.

I’ve not tried a rolling release so cannot confirm whether it also does the same.

Is it possible for someone from Inovelli to respond on this? We’re following the instructions precisely (up paddle + config for 20 seconds), and it tries to pair in the home app (as in, it’s listed) but it never actually connects. What’s going on and does it need to be RMA’ed?

For iOS, I think there is a bug in the iOS Home App that sometimes prevents pairing.

I’ve found that these workaround methods often work:

Method #1:
Do a full power-off (unplug) all your Apple thread border routers and controllers (Apple TVs, HomePods, HomePod minis. Its pretty much the IT stereotype method (“Have you tried turning it off and on again”).

Method #2:

  1. Reset the switch using the Config+Paddle-Up 20 seconds until LED turns Red, then release, method
  2. Using the “Camera” app and not the iOS Home app, scan the QR code
  3. The iOS Camera app will then show a highlighted link to “Home” - tap on that
  4. You’ll then be asked to select your Home - do that and proceed to the pairing step.

I’ve found Method 2 often results in successful pairing even when you can’t pair directly from the iOS Home app. No reasonable explanation for this, but I’ve found it does work in a large number of cases where you can’t pair from within iOS. Hopefully, this will be fixed in iOS 18.

Method #3
Sometimes after a pairing failure, data is left in the iOS Keychain that causes problems with pairing. Go to iOS Settings (Gear icon) → General → Matter Accessories and look for a “dead” “VTM31-SN” entry. If you have paired multiple VTM31s, you can tell which ones are active by looking for the name of your iOS Home below the "VTM31-SN’. label - or click on the label which brings you to the “Connected Services” page → if there are no “Connected Services” that is probably a dead entry.

Use Method #1 and #2 first. Method #3 is a little risky in that if you do it wrong, you’ll delete an entry for a working switch, then have to remove and re-pair that switch all over again.

Thanks for your reply. I was able to get it to pair using your second method. I discovered we could do that a long time ago, but I never realized it could be used as a fallback when Apple Home is being stubborn. You may be onto something with identifying a HomeKit glitch. Can I ask, are you able to manually reignite the pairing process on the switch by pressing the Config button three times? This discovery of yours wouldn’t solve for that issue I’m having.

Also, with Method #1, I called out the discrepancy between the text instructions and the video demonstration. I’d like to know what 3 colors flash for you after you see the green/yellow/red and then release? Is it 3x red or is it cyan > green/yellow > blue?

The digital manual has text instructions that read: Hold Up & Config until stoplight colors flash, then let go and you’ll see…cyan > green/yellow (depending on neutral or non-neutral) > blue

The video demonstration tied to the text shows: Hold Up & Config until stoplight colors flash, then let go and you’ll see…red > red > red

Which is it? I hope the company reads this soon and updates the video/instructions so that they match.

Edit: It looks like they updated the text for the video and notated that they’re using a Blue Series. The three red flashes is not what we should be looking for.

Pressing a button 3X should not restart pairing. This device includes button tapping detection and a 3X press is a valid button tapping sequence.

  • Apple doesn’t support triple-tap, but other platforms like HomeAssistant do (the switch can report up to a 5 tap sequence on any of its buttons as well as long-press and release after long-press).
  • Apple only detects single press, double press, and long press.

The Matter standard requires that an unpaired device enter pairing after power-on. So if your device hasn’t been paired, you can pull out and then push back in the air gap switch below the lower edge of the paddle bottom.

  • The device stays in the pairing / commissioning mode for up to15 minutes (Section 5.4.2.3 of the Matter Core Spec.) after which you’ll have to power cycle it again.

I am aware that power cycling the switch will retrigger the pairing mode & that it cuts out in 15 minutes. Can you please share what this highlighted text means if it’s not a way to retrigger the pairing process? It sure reads that way to me.

Edit: If history repeats itself again, that blue highlighted line may be copied over from the Blue Series & was missed when they published this White Series manual.

I believe this is a copy paste from blue. The only time I have seen them pulsing blue is while being setup the first time while it’s pairing.

Thanks for your input. Would love for the company to strip out all the Blue Series content from the White Series manual & to confirm this second finding.
